Once you have an idea what this principle means to you, find a way to express yourself. Maybe you want to write about it, build a sculpture, act it out, or paint, draw, color your thoughts! I'm hoping for interpretative dance or puppet shows!

Conscience and Democracy
Definition Hunt
In the bylaws of the Unitarian Universalist Association, we state:
...the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large
In RE, we often restate this as
By listening deeply and deciding together, we make better choices
This all sounds great, but do we really know what it means?
For this challenge, let's understand these ideas in a few different ways:
- Talk with an adult about the word "conscience." What does it mean? Do you think all people have one? Can you think of a popular character who represents the "conscience"? Maybe watch a clip of that character to see how they help guide others in decision making?
- Pinocchio and Jiminy Cricket might be a little out of date but it offers us an opportunity to talk about different views of the word
"conscience." What do you think the song means
by conscience, temptation, and "straight and narrow
path"? Does any part of the song resonate with you
or the children? How do you and they interpret the
call to "let your conscience be your guide"?
When you get in trouble
And you don't know right from wrong
Give a little whistle!
Give a little whistle!
When you meet temptation
And the urge is very strong
Give a little whistle!
Give a little whistle!
Not just a little squeak
Pucker up and blow
And if your whistle's weak
Yell Jiminy Cricket
Take the straight and narrow path
And if you start to slide
Give a little whistle!
Give a little whistle!
And always let your conscience be your guide
Take the straight and narrow path
And if you start to slide
Give a little whistle!
Give a little whistle!
And always let your conscience be your guide
And always let your conscience be your guide
